Great Western Main Line
The Fiddle Yard bursting at the seams prior to the start of the "Present Day - Reading" scenes. Three livery variants of the Great Western HSTs can be spotted on tracks 9 (top), 8 & 7 whilst Classes 221, 170, 166, 159 & 158 may also be spotted.
A trio of HSTs at the northern end of STROLEY CENTRAL pose for the camera. The "Merlin" liveried 2 + 6 set (43185 GREAT WESTERN + 43168) is sandwiched between FGW "fag packet" liveried (nearest the camera) 2 + 6 set (43172 + 43009) and uppermost, the original variant of the FGW "Barbie" livery covering the final 2 + 6 set (43042 + 43029).
West Coast Railways 47854 is disappearing off shed via the bi-directional Yard Line to take up it's next duty, whilst EWS' 37419, 47785 FIONA CASTLE & 66135 bask in the sunshine alongside FGW's 57602 RESTORMEL CASTLE & 57605 TOTNES CASTLE. Cotswold Rail's 08871 awaits the bogie tanks delivery to replenish the stocks of fuel which it will trip from HECHAM YARD.
From left to right, the three HST Power Cars in view are 43009, 43168 & 43029. Stabled in the LINDEVEN DMU STABLING YARD is 47778 IRRESISTIBLE and it's TPO stock. Just in view in platform 6 is 166202 an NSE liveried Turbo Express, whilst two Mendip 59s 59102 VILLAGE of CHANTRY and 59005 KENNETH J PAINTER refuel prior to their next duties. Just spotted on the other refuelling line is 47813 S. S. GREAT BRITAIN.
Passing through STROLEY WEST JUNCTION, albeit in opposite directions, FGW's 43042 on the rear of an "up" service and 43172 is about to head under the dual carriagway and continue it's westbound journey.
47778 IRRESISTIBLE and it's TPO + PCV await the loading of the mail bound for LOW FELL in NEWCASTLE in platform one whilst SWT's 159019 departs platform 2b via the mid platform crossovers to "leapfrog" Stagecoach's revised livery applied to 159009 which disgorges it's passengers in platform 2a. 43168 and it's HST set completes the scene.
159009 departs eastbound and will take the "up relief" line as indicated by the caution aspect of the appropriate colour light signal.
Virgin's 221130 Super Voyager now occupies both sections of platform 2, whilst the Turbo Express 166202 has number 5a as it's booked platform. FGW Link's 166214 can be spotted nearest in platform 6a awaiting it's next trip back to the capital.
From top to bottom, Platform 1 to 5 inclusive can be seen 47778 IRRESISTIBLE, Virgin's 221130, FGW's 43042, the Regional Railways Express 158757 and finally SWT's 170301. The destinations of these in the same order as above are:- NEWCASTLE (Low Fell), GLASGOW, PENZANCE, CARDIFF and BASINGSTOKE; a diverse set which shows STROLEY CENTRAL to have local and national destinations.
